Water Hardness in Drinking Water: Testing and Treatment

What hardness actually is


Hard water contains elevated multivalent cations—mainly calcium and magnesium, but also iron, manganese, barium, strontium, aluminum, and similar ions with a charge of +2 or higher. Sodium, potassium, and lithium do not count as hardness.

Results are usually reported as mg/L as CaCO3 or grains per gallon (gpg). The page uses:

1 gpg = 17.12 mg/L as CaCO3

That CaCO3 expression is only an equivalent. Hardness is about the cations, not “how much calcium carbonate is dissolved.”

Hardness is split into:

  • Temporary (carbonate) hardness — associated with carbonate, bicarbonate, and hydroxide. Heating or boiling can drive off CO2, supersaturate the water, and precipitate white/gray scale that often dissolves in vinegar.


  • Permanent (non-carbonate) hardness — associated with chloride, sulfate, and nitrate; boiling does not remove it.

Source is usually natural: rainwater plus carbon dioxide forms weak carbonic acid, which dissolves minerals from soil and rock.


Classification


There is no primary drinking-water standard for hardness. The page uses this scale.

The author says aesthetic complaints often start around 160–180 mg/L as CaCO3, and personally prefers moderately hard water. Very soft water, especially <50 mg/L, is flagged as potentially corrosive to metal pipes, fixtures, and appliances.


Effects


Health: Hard water is not considered a health hazard and can contribute dietary calcium and magnesium. Studies on heart disease and kidney stones are mixed or inconclusive. Hard water may leave a film on skin and hair and has been discussed as a possible eczema risk factor, but that is not presented as settled.

Household problems: Soap and some detergents form sticky curd. Laundry can look gray, feel stiff, and wear out faster. Dishes spot. Skin and hair can feel filmy or dull. Scale and white/gray coatings form on fixtures, shower doors, aerators, and inside pipes and water heaters, reducing flow and efficiency.


Testing


  • The first or basic test is the observations of a problem.  We call this Level 1 testing.   

  • Home kits can place water in a softness class but are not precise, but they can be a great first start. We call this Level 2 testing.

  • Broader lab panels are recommended before designing treatment, especially to check iron, manganese, other metals, chloride, sulfate, carbonates/bicarbonate, bacteria, and corrosion indicators. We call this Level 3 testing.

  • Certified testing is advised when a specific cation or related problem must be documented. We call this Level 4 testing.


Water Treatment for Hardness or Corrosion Issues


Pretreatment, such as disinfection or particle filtration, may be needed if bacteria, settleable solids, or turbidity are present.

Main options described:

  • Salt-based ion-exchange softeners — exchange sodium or potassium for hardness ions; best for very hard water; regenerate with brine; add sodium, a concern for some people with high blood pressure.

  • Salt-free / sequestering systems (examples named: NUVO/citric acid, Aquios/polyphosphate) — keep hardness ions in solution rather than removing them; aimed at modest hardness reduction; cartridges typically changed about every 6 months.

  • Catalytic / crystallization media — intended to form crystals that are less likely to scale; media life cited around 750,000+ gallons depending on hardness.

  • Point-of-use or Whole House RO — for drinking water, sometimes paired with salt-free whole-house units.

  • Short-term: boiling and filtering can drop some temporary hardness; faucet or under-sink catalytic filters are also mentioned.

The page’s practical stance: some hardness is useful; treat when it causes scale, soap problems, or equipment damage—not because hardness itself is toxic.
