Iron-related Bacteria and Drinking Water Problems

Iron bacteria are chemotrophs that obtain energy by oxidizing dissolved iron (and sometimes manganese). They commonly occur in soil, shallow aquifers, and some surface waters and are not specifically regulated under primary drinking-water standards, though their effects can contribute to violations of aesthetic (secondary) standards or other issues.
Problems They Cause
These bacteria produce:
- Metallic sheens on and in drinking water
- Slimy coatings that appear yellow, brown, red, or black
- Brown foam
- Biofilms that can contribute to microbiologically induced corrosion
They are associated with elevated levels of iron, manganese, arsenic, and (in extreme cases) corrosion by-products such as aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc. The reduced forms of iron and manganese become more soluble, which can worsen staining and other aesthetic issues. Biofilms may also reduce the effectiveness of disinfection systems and create aesthetic problems and may adversely impact immunocompromised individuals.
Health Risks
No specific direct health risks from iron bacteria themselves are noted. They primarily create aesthetic (taste, odor, appearance, staining) and operational problems. However, heavy growth can lead to higher dissolved metals, interfere with disinfection, or create conditions that allow other organisms to thrive.
Standards
There are no specific numerical standards for iron-reducing bacteria. Related bacterial indicators include total coliform (should be absent) and heterotrophic plate count (typically < 500 colonies per mL). Aesthetic nuisance issues are indirectly controlled through secondary standards.
Detection and Testing
Level 1 – Observational self-testing (senses + simple checks):
- Discolored (yellow/red/brown/black) or slimy walls inside toilet tanks or other water-holding vessels
- Metallic sheen or slimy feel
- Discolored first-flush water (especially after periods of non-use)
- Increased staining or rising iron/manganese levels over time
- Existing filters clog more quickly than normal and they are coated with a red, brown, yellow, or black coating that feels slimy.
Level 2 – DIY and lab testing: Low-cost specific iron-bacteria kits are limited, but useful options include BART tests for iron-related, sulfate-reducing, and slime-forming bacteria; iron/copper test strips; and laboratory packages that specifically check for iron bacteria or broader problem panels (often combined with iron, manganese, and general bacterial quality). Shock disinfection is sometimes recommended before further testing if bacteria are confirmed.

Treatment Recommendations (from the page)
Short-term:
- Inspect the wellhead.
- Perform shock disinfection of the well and distribution system (recommended twice), with treatment systems bypassed and in-line filters/aerators removed.
- Flush lines thoroughly.
- Pasteurize the water heater and household lines if applicable.
- For municipal (city) water, flushing the main and addressing the home system may be needed; a clear filter housing right after the entry point is suggested. You may want to check the disinfection residual of the water and the oxidation reduction potential (ORP).
Long-term:
- Municipal systems: Usually handled by the utility (higher residual disinfectant, pipe changes, flushing).
- Private wells: Often requires chemical oxidation/disinfection + reaction tank + backwashable particle filtration (sometimes followed by carbon or other treatments for remaining issues).
