EPA Seeks Public Comment on Glyphosate Open Literature Search

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released for public comment the results of a comprehensive open literature search that will inform its forthcoming glyphosate human health risk assessment.

As part of registration review—the Agency's periodic reevaluation of registered pesticides—EPA is reviewing glyphosate to determine whether it continues to meet the statutory standard for registration as the scientific record evolves. Because the published literature on glyphosate is large and growing, EPA routinely searches, screens, and evaluates peer-reviewed studies and considers additional open-literature studies submitted during public comment periods.

The document released today describes EPA's systematic review methods and lists the studies identified to date, including publications found since the Agency's last open literature review in 2017. Relevant studies from this search, and from public submissions, will inform the upcoming human health risk assessment, including potential dietary risks from residues in food and water. EPA expects to complete that assessment in late 2026 and will then release it for public comment.

Because EPA relies on gold-standard science, commenters who identify additional studies should submit the complete paper and its underlying data, or clear instructions on how to obtain them. Each study must be evaluable for quality, reproducibility, and other scientific factors. Submissions should include a full citation: author(s), publication date, journal title, and article title.

This comment period is limited to identifying peer-reviewed studies that EPA may consider going forward. When the updated human health risk assessment is released, the public will have a separate opportunity to comment on EPA's evaluation of the science and its conclusions. At this stage, EPA encourages stakeholders to submit specific studies not already listed in the summary document.

The open literature review is available for a 30-day public comment period in docket EPA-HQ-OPP-2009-0361. Comments must be submitted at regulations.gov by September 24, 2026.
