Our Drinking Water Educational Booklet

The Carbon County Environmental Education Center and the Pocono Northeast RC&D Council (PNERCD) is working with the KnowYourH2O Team and B.F. Environmental Consultants, Inc. to help educate water system customers and private well owners on drinking water quality by making available an special version of the booklet titled “Our Drinking Water: Get Informed, Get Tested, and Get Treatment Public Community, & Private Water Systems”  as a pdf or electronic document.

The goal of this guide is to help educate and inform citizens on issues related to water conservation, to ensure that private water supply systems produce safe drinking water for your family, to protect the long-term quality of our streams and drinking water sources, and to help you to understand the potential sources of pollution to our water resources.

The booklet provides an informational guide to many of the common ways your water can become contaminated. It provides information related to the Primary Standards (Health) or Secondary Standards (Aesthetic) concerns for each Contaminant and provides information on Contaminants that do not specifically have a drinking water limit - No Standards.  In addition, the electronic booklet provides direct access to the color information graphics that were developed to explain and depict groundwater aquifers, well construction, and issues with lead service lines.

In addition, it covers the multiple levels of water testing, from basic observations you can do yourself to Certified Testing using chain-of-custody.

This reference is intended as a guide to understand water quality by providing guidance on selecting water quality testing parameters for Baseline Testing from a citizen’s perspective and by serving as a tool to help interpret water quality data. In some cases, this document provides guidance on what actions you may want to consider.
