Methane gas has been a “hidden” problem in many regions because methane is colorless, odorless, lighter than air, and highly flammable. When burned in its purest form, methane gas produces carbon dioxide and water vapor. It is typically associated with wetlands, bogs, termites and other insects that break down woody material, landfills, coal-producing formations, natural saline seeps, some glacial deposits, sewage treatment, sludge digestion, and oil and gas development and natural gas storage areas. Therefore, methane has both natural and man-made sources.
